We have heard from many parents expressing concerns about the recent pronouncement that vaccines or Tylenol (acetaminophen) are associated with autism, as well as claims suggesting leucovorin may be a universal treatment for children on the autism spectrum. At Allegro Pediatrics, our goal is to provide accurate, evidence-based information to help patient families make informed decisions about your child’s care.
It is important to understand that medical standards of care continually evolve as new research is published. At this time, no new study results have been shared that support a change in the standard of care for our patients with autism.
Currently, there is no evidence that either vaccines or Tylenol cause autism.
- Vaccines: Multiple high-quality studies over several decades have demonstrated there is no link between vaccines and autism. Allegro providers recommend that families adhere to the current vaccination guidelines, as immunization is one of the most effective ways to prevent serious diseases.
- Tylenol: Experts agree that Tylenol used during pregnancy to reduce higher risk conditions such as fever or pain remains safe when individuals discuss their clinical situation with their OB or midwife. Parents should not feel blamed or worried if Tylenol has been used in the past. Likewise, Tylenol is safe for children when used for proper reasons, at correct dosages, and under medical guidance.
You may also hear discussion about leucovorin (folinic acid) as a potential autism treatment. While initial studies suggest that it might help certain subgroups of patients with autism who have impaired metabolism, more research is needed before it can be recommended as a safe and effective standard of care for all children with autism.
Families with specific concerns are encouraged to schedule an appointment with their pediatrician. Treatment plan recommendations will be tailored to address the symptoms or behaviors your child is exhibiting.
Please read this statement from the AAP, which includes additional links to accurate, evidence-based information.
